Rapid Oral Presentations
Share your expertise at CANVAS 2025!
Abstract submissions are open until July 8, 2025.
All scientific abstracts are accepted! Gain presentation experience and professional recognition among premier agronomic, crop, soil, and related science professionals. Your efforts will expand your CV/vita, disseminate information for all to succeed, and foster lasting collaborations with your peers.
Concerned you might not have enough detail for an abstract before the submission deadline?
- Abstracts at this point are “holding slots” that reserve your spot in the desired session.
- The Program Planning Committee will require a title, full payment, and just enough abstract content to ensure your submissions are placed in proper sessions.
- Research details and more solid content can be added through November 12.
- Please note that in-person submissions cannot be transferred to virtual sessions.
Rapid Oral Presentations
Simplify. Summarize. Streamline.
- Helping scientists strive for brevity in their communications, the Societies offer a compact style of presentation at CANVAS called "5 Minute Rapid" presentation. The training video below explains how to structure your talk to fit the "rapid" format.
- In standard writing and presentation recommendations, experts state the following length limits:
- Six-worded titles
- Best readership of blog posts is three minutes
- Best viewership of YouTube videos is three minutes
- By following a 5-minute format, you are joining the leading edge of science communications.
The importance of being concise
5 Minute Rapid Format
There will be three slides per talk. An optional template is downloadable from this site, and the 5-minute training video on this page gives examples of how to get to three slides within a 5-minute presentation. See frequently asked questions for more information.
- Title slide (six words)—uses the question as the title and lists authors/co-authors and their respective institutions.
- Results—one slide, including figure/table. Use SI units in text, figures, and tables.
- Recommendations/summary slide.
5 Minute Rapid Benefits
What will you get out of doing a 5 Minute Rapid?
- Brevity creates excitement. Be prepared for robust discussion about your research after the session is over.
- Combine with a poster presentation, and the 5-minute talk becomes your “advertisement” for the poster session.
- Experience with being concise gives you tools to communicate effectively with the public, funders, and other audiences.
- Most importantly, you will learn to tell your story in a clear, succinct manner. In a world on information overload, we are truly successful only when we help others see why our work is important in a short, impactful way.
Poster Presentations
- All posters will be displayed on a half-size poster board for one day. (Display space can be no larger than 44.5" x 44.5".)
- Poster board numbers will be placed in the upper corners of the boards on 4½" x 3" cards.
- All presenters will present for a two-hour period on one day.
- Please be sure to set up your poster between 7:00-9:00am on the day of your presentation, as many attendees and judges enjoy viewing posters ahead of the actual presentations.
- The poster boards are Velcro-friendly, so do not use thumb tacks or pins.

Alternate Poster Layouts
Due to increased survey feedback requesting alternate scientific poster layouts, the Societies is drawing our poster presenters’ attention to Mike Morrison’s poster templates.
This alternate format is merely an option for poster authors and not required by the Societies.
