Talking Soils, Plant Science, and the Societies!

March was a busy month for the Societies in their outreach efforts to teachers and students.
SSSA K‐12 Committee members Clay Robinson (aka Dr. Dirt and member of the SSSA Board of Directors), Wale Adewunmi and Missy Holzer (past SSSA K‐12 Committee Chairs), and Susan Chapman (Director of Special Projects for ASA, CSSA, and SSSA) staffed the SSSA and ASA K‐12 booth at the National Science Teachers Association Conference, March 20–23 in Denver, CO. This conference, with 10,000 attendees, is our premiere venue to showcase all of our K‐12 materials and how teachers can integrate soil and plant science lessons and activities into their classroom curriculum. We talked with many hundreds of teachers, added 220 of them to our teachers list, conducted a workshop about soils and soil activities with 40+ teacher attendees, and did a book giveaway. Check out the activities we featured at soils4teachers.org and agronomy4me.org.

On March 22 in Chicago, IL, the Societies hosted a booth during the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS) Career Fair. Undergraduate student member Cy’Heim McRae and the Societies Director of Governance Sara Uttech promoted the value of joining a scientific society to attendees who were primarily undergraduate and graduate students with some professional members. Trial memberships, Annual Meeting abstracts, and the Bridge Scholars Annual Meeting Program were highlights.
