The journey of a gene: Teaching and learning genetic engineering in plants and animals

Summary: Genetic engineering has been used to aid production of many high acreage crops in U.S. agriculture for decades. Despite the widespread use of genetic engineering, misinformation and skepticism of this technology is prevalent. In addition, teachers lack training and confidence to teach the topic in‐depth. The Journey of a Gene was created as a tool for teachers to use to direct learning about genetic engineering. This web lesson is a student‐ready, online teaching tool designed to take the learner through the steps of genetic engineering from start to finish. Learners progress through a series of videos, animations, and quizzes to engage with the material.
